Indiana and Lafayette Streets?

KulshanCLT wants everyone to have accurate information and wants anyone who is interested to become involved in future discussions and meetings that KulshanCLT will be hosting. Meeting dates will be announced through the Birchwood Neighborhood Association website and by other means.

As you will understand, many Birchwood residents, but not all residents, had a chance to participate in the prior KulshanCLT’s meetings with neighborhood residents in 2009 and 2010, which included the informal KulshanCLT meetings in fall 2009, the City of Bellingham Hearing Examiner process in early 2010, and regular Birchwood Neighborhood Association meetings when Paul Schissler provided updates from KulshanCLT.

Site planning with neighborhood involvement will begin in 2011, with informal meetings where everyone will be invited to participate. In the meantime, for anyone who has questions, KulshanCLT staff would like to hear and answer those questions. Also, KulshanCLT staff would like to hear all concerns, suggestions or ideas that anyone would like to share.

KulshanCLT staff will be willing to meet with neighborhood residents and others, if that would be helpful. Please call or email to set up a time to meet with KulshanCLT staff or to learn more about the development. KulshanCLT can be reached at (360) 671-5600 and at 215 W. Holly St., Suite H-20 in downtown Bellingham. Also, feel free to contact project manager Paul Schissler at PaulSchissler@KulshanCLT.org and (360) 671-5600 extension 102, or Executive Director Dean Fearing at DeanFearing@KulshanCLT.org and extension 106.

KulshanCLT asks that you please help dispel rumors and circulate accurate information about KulshanCLT by encouraging anyone with questions to contact KulshanCLT (contact info above.) On behalf of the members, staff and board of KulshanCLT, thank you for helping to make a great neighborhood, Birchwood, an even better neighborhood by participating in civil society.

Little Squailicum Creek Contaminated Materials Clean Up

Polluted soil and sediment from Little Squalicum Creek will be dug up, moved nearby to The Oeser Co. property and covered under a $1.5 million cleanup that the Environmental Protection Agency expects to start in August.

The plan includes possibly setting aside the existing upper part of the creek - upstream from the Marine Drive Bridge - as backup storage for the contaminated material, according to the EPA.

The EPA hopes to start the actual cleanup on Aug. 18, although the federal agency is still finalizing details such as access agreements. But crews will be at the park within the next two weeks for preliminary brush clearing and soil sampling. The cleanup is expected to take six weeks. During it, the main trail through the park will be closed and beach access will be affected.

Details: Call Howard Orlean, EPA superfund project manager, at (206) 553-2851, or JeanneO'Dell, community involvement coordinator, at (206) 553-6919.More on the cleanup: Go online to go.usa.gov/ltk and scroll down to Little Squalicum Creek.

PARK USE LIMITED

Beginning the first week of August, the main trail through Little Squalicum Park will be closed to the public during the Environmental Protection Agency's cleanup of polluted Little Squalicum Creek. That trail starts at Bellingham Technical College and ends at Little Squalicum Beach.

Another side trail will be closed for parts of the cleanup. Beach access will be affected as well.A detour route will be marked and warning signs will be posted during the cleanup, which is expected to last about six weeks.

The park will not be closed during the cleanup, as EPA indicated in a postcard sent out about an Aug. 5 open house to discuss the cleanup. Details: 778-7000.

Read more: http://www.bellinghamherald.com/2010/07/23/1537797/epa-plans-to-start-cleanup-of.html#ixzz0uWkpNXGj

Organized by four neighborhoods on the north side of Bellingham, it will explore problems reported by residents and provide details on the patchwork of land ownership in the area.

A group of Birchwood and Columbia residents that formed to work on safety issues in Little Squalicum Park will discuss the actions they have taken so far, and the responses, including the Port’s decisions to increase patrols and add signs regulating use of the area. The audience will view a large map showing the jurisdictional mix, and hear how that has perpetuated problems. The city planning department’s report on possible annexation of the area is expected to be finished and also available for discussion. An additional issue is the past contamination of the creek and plans for cleaning it up.

The session will be held at Bellingham Technical College (BTC), Haskell Center, room 108 A and B. The vice president for administrative services at BTC, Debra Jones, will also attend, Parking is available in the visitor lot off Nome Street and in the staff lot off Lindberg Avenue. Haskell Center is located along Lindberg Avenue, between Buildings H and F.
