About Birchwood Neighborhood

Birchwood Neighborhood Association meetings are every other month on Tuesdays at Shuksan Middle School cafeteria from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.

2011-12 Meeting schedule: September 20th, November 29th, January 24th, March 27th, and May 22nd.

The Birchwood Neighborhood is located in the north-western quadrant of Bellingham, Washington. Bellingham was founded in 1853 and presently has a population of 71,289 people. Outside magazine calls Bellingham one of its 10 “Dream Towns,” noting its close access to shorelines, rivers, the San Juan Islands and the Cascade Mountains. We like to think of the Birchwood Neighborhood as being one of the best in town to live in - The neighborhood is characterized by older, well-kept homes built on large lots (20,000 square feet or greater). The large lots, mature landscaping, and narrow streets lend a rural atmosphere to the neighborhood, creating a welcoming feel for visitors and residents.

Other significant features of the neighborhood include the Bellingham Golf and Country Club, the Squalicum Creek greenbelt, Bellingham Technical College, and Shuksan Middle School. Little Squalicum Park, located just outside the neighborhood boundary, provides salt water frontage on Bellingham Bay. The Bay to Baker Trail and greenway connects Little Squalicum, Birchwood and Squalicum Creek Parks.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR BIRCHWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOC.

President: John Coleman joined the BNA Board in 2009 and has been President since 2010. A Bellingham resident since 2002, John and moved to the Birchwood Neighborhood in 2007. As a city planner, he works daily on urban development issues ranging from project specific development to the implementation of the community’s long range planning goals. When not at work or tending his backyard chickens, John can be found on area trails or supporting our Downtown business owners. Buy Local!

Vice President: Dan Welch

Secretary: Barbara Campbell has lived on Birchwood Avenue (2 different houses) for 35 years. She has served on the Board for 24 years. Barbara retired from 25 years of teaching in 2001. She was the Birchwood Elementary Librarian from 1991-2001. You may contact her at: campbell2920@comcast.net

Treasurer: Rebecca Schlotterback has lived on and off in Bellingham for 44 years and in the Birchwood Neighborhood for 11 years. She joined the BNA Board in 2006. Becky works for Public Utility District 1 focusing on water resource issues. Contact her at: Rebecca.Schlotterback@comcast.net

Sue DenAdel has lived in the Birchwood Neighborhood for 35 years. She has been a member of the BNA almost from the beginning of it's origin. She has served as a board member for numerous years and was the secretary of the board for numerous years as well. After the Oeser Company became a Superfund site she became the president of the Oeser Cedar Cleanup Coalition, formed in 1998 by a combination of BNA members as well as others in the community, to represent the Birchwood neighborhood throughout the superfund process by overseeing the EPA. Stephanie Twiford was born and raised in Bellingham. After four years in Anchorage Alaska, she moved back to Bellingham, eventually purchasing her aunt & uncles home in the Birchwood neighborhood. She and her husband have two kids that attended Birchwood, Shuksan and Bellingham High School. She was active in PTSA at Birchwood and at Shuksan helping in the greenhouse. She attended City of Bellingham’s Planning Academy I and II and is very interested in working to retaining the neighborhood character of each neighborhood in Bellingham. Cari Duffy

Jon Raney attended Sehome high school in the late 60"s then decamped to the East Coast from whence he returned only to visit his family until 2002 when he began working for the Whatcom County Public Defenders Office. Since then he and his wife Marie have lived in the Birchwood Neighborhood where he amuses himself and sometimes others with various boating, gardening and literary endeavors.
